Tele-Traffic UK collect award for
speed camera aimed at motorcyclists
Warwick-based global traffic safety equipment production
company, Tele-Traffic UK, have today received a top
industry award for developing a brand new speed camera
that will have motorcyclists engaging their brains
and applying their brakes.
The Award for Innovation was presented by HRH Prince
Michael of Kent at this year’s Prince Michael
International Road Safety Awards in celebration of
Tele-Traffic UK’s latest triumph, the Commander
System.
Tele-Traffic UK Chairman, Frank Garratt, is delighted.
He says: “This is yet another tool in the fight
against a group that our customers identified as particularly
difficult to tackle.”
The Commander is a bespoke system that aims to deter
motorcyclists from speeding in built-up areas – a
worrying propensity for more than half of all motorcyclists
according to statistics published by the Department
for Transport last year.
“Speeding in areas operating a strict 30mph
speed limit is a problem we historically connect with
motorists“, advises Frank Garratt. “This
prompted the introduction of targeted road safety campaigns
for television and radio encouraging motorists to slow
down. But the big change came with the installation
of speed enforcement systems.
“Regular speed cameras are perfectly sufficient
when tracking the speed of vehicles with front-facing
number plates”, he explains, “but they
fall down when tasked with identifying vehicles with
rear-facing number plates only, ie motorcycles. Our
brief with the Commander, therefore, was to develop
a new speed-capture device to tackle the limitations
of existing single-angle capture technology.”
The Commander comprises van-based technology with
360° angle capability. Pictures are taken from
the front, sides and back of the motorcycle to ensure
maximum enforcement and identification, thereby significantly
increasing the chances of successful prosecution.
In its 21st year, The Prince Michael International
Road Safety Awards continue to recognise and celebrate
the achievements and innovations of those who have
improved road safety throughout Britain.
